Winemakers Notes

2009 Riesling

Tasting Note:
On the nose there are lots of fragrant floral flowers, while on the palate there are limey, citrus floral aromatic flavours.

Winemaking Notes:
The 2009 Stafford Lane Riesling is created from 100% estate grown fruit, which is managed under Sustainable Winegrowing practices (SWNZ).  Fruit was selectively handpicked early, to achieve more citrusy notes in the wine, and a lighter, lower alcohol wine.

Once in the winery, after being chilled overnight, the fruit was gently de-stemmed before pressing, and a specific Riesling yeast strain was used.  A hand’s off approach was taken in the winery, allowing the wine to develop its own characteristics, and no fining agents were necessary. This wine received a gentle filtration prior to bottling.
We feel the Nelson District lends itself well to this style of Riesling, as we can achieve good fruit maturity at lower brix levels, and it also allows the fruit to be harvested before any disease pressure can set in.

About Stafford Lane

Stafford Lane

Stafford Lane is a family owned orchard, olive grove, and boutique winery located on Nelson's beautiful Waimea Plains. Unique soil conditions and the region's favourable climate combine to produce an abundance of fruit perfect for Stafford Lane's wide range of memorable products.

Stafford Lane Estate is on the Moutere Highway 8km from Richmond on the Waimea plains. The property was named after Edward William Stafford, 3 times Prime Minister of New Zealand, who owned a large amount of land here. He built Stafford House, which is near by, and the lane that ran to his house is on the boundary of our property. It can still be seen in places. The label represents Stafford lane, with the vineyard posts leading to the Mount Arthur mountain range, which is the tail end of the southern alps in the background. The Stafford Lane Estate label was established by the previous owners but it was never widely marketed.

Nelson   Region

Very sunny region producing ripe, aromatic, flavourful Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc dashed with freshness and cool attitude.
