AUSTRALIA CONSIDERING INCREASED WINE TAXES

The new Australian Federal Government continues to send strong signals that it is about to increase taxes on wine as well as other alcohol beverages. Currently there 4 reviews of federal and state wine tax regimes under way by various bureaucracies, including consideration that suspermarkets and other chain retailers are forced to fix higher prices for alcohol.
Currently Australia is New Zealand's largest wine export market, and under CER is liable to the same regulatory controls, including taxation, as Australian producers. Any change in the current system is likely to have a profound influence on New Zealand wine producers.
