CHAMPAGNE GETS ITS CARBON DIOXIDE NUMBER IN
Date: Tue 19 Feb 2008
Champagne has become the first French winegrowing region to complete an evaluation of carbon emissions from its wine production. The data released yesterday by the Comité Interprofessionnel de Vins de Champagne (CIVC) during the official launch of the Bordeaux Carbon Initiative, shows champagne production releases 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.
Of this total, 39% is from packaging, 24% is produced in the vineyard and by winemaking practises, 13% is from transport, 11% from miscellaneous machinery, 8% from viticultural and winemaking material brought into the region, and 5% from administration. The findings have prompted a number of Champagne producers to investigate ways of reducing carbon costs associated with packaging, in particular the weight of bottles.
